The geo-economic story of our time has been China's spectacular growth and modernization. Since the adoption of the reform-and-opening policy of the early 1980s, the rate and scale of China's economic rise has been unprecedented. No other country in human history had succeeded in raising so many people out of poverty in so short a time period, more than 500 million in less than 40 years. China looks on course to become the world's largest economy within the next decade, and is likely to be more than twice the size of U.S. economy by 2050.
