We'll miss you, John Freeman

When John Freeman died unexpectedly of a heart attack on 3 March 2008, the field of strategic organization lost an influential scholar and leader. John earned his PhD in sociology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and started his academic career at Berkeley in 1975. He joined the faculty at Cornell's Johnson School of Management for eight years while serving as editor of Administrative Science Quarterly (1985-1993), and then returned to Berkeley in 1993 as professor of entrepreneurship and innovation and director of the Lester Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the Haas School of Business. John's growing interest in entrepreneurship led him in 1997 to found the Berkeley Entrepreneurship Laboratory, a resource center for young firms, for which John was also CEO.
