Exploring the Role of the Board of Directors in Cooperatives: Lessons for Microfinance

The role of the board is crucial to improve performance of cooperatives by monitoring senior management and providing guidance for strategy. Several recommendations could be given concerning the selection of directors. The board's role can be improved by favoring collective decision-making, choosing good governance bodies, and having an efficient interaction between the chairman and CEO.
