Which of your servers are important? Should you and could you afford to protect them all? These are questions that many IT administrators ask themselves when evaluating fault-tolerant technologies. As a general trend, for an environment that has 100 servers: 1. 2-3% are "critical" to the company and therefore every measure of fault-tolerance is considered. 2. 8-12% are "important" to some major department or function, and some options of fault-tolerance are considered. 3. The remaining 85% are considered "normal," so tape backup is the only assumed alternative.
