Peter Wyhinny, director, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, looks at alternative vehicle fuels and the effects they will have on the UK's distribution industry — and explains what VW are doing to meet potential demand. European economies are going 'green' and the distribution industry, along with many other targets, is in the firing line. Anything remotely resembling vehicle pollution or emission is under scrutiny. Environmental friendliness is no more the stamping ground and sole domain of pressure groups and those who can afford to indulge in green products. It is a welcome fact of life, an important purchasing factor, and is supported by governments - local, regional and national. Environmental and transport issues are fundamentally based on hard fact: that the fossil fuels, which are the origin of petrol and diesel, have a limited life, so limited that they will run out within about three generations unless we do something about it.
