Verizon told Maryland regulators a unique computer software glitch caused 12,500 unlisted Verizon phone numbers to run in a rival publisher's print phone directory for Hagerstown and Washington County. The Public Service Commission brought Verizon in last week, seeking an explanation for the error and the company's response to it. Verizon software failed as it was preparing listings for delivery to Ogden Directory, stopping the work. When the system restarted, corruption of an instruction to exclude unlisted numbers caused them to be included in the printing order. No one caught the error until May 30, when complaints began about unlisted numbers' appearing in Ogden's 2008 Washington County EZ Big Book directory.
