US NRC Staff Recommends Issuance of a License to ISP for its Consolidated Storage Facility

On July 29, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued its final environmental impact statement (FEIS) related to the application submitted by Interim Storage Partners, LLC (ISP) to build and operate a consolidated interim storage facility (CISF) for spent nuclear fuel. Based on the results of the environmental review, the NRC staff recommends that the proposed license be granted. The NRC staff is also concluding an analysis and review of the technical safety aspects of the application. ISP is a joint venture of Waste Control Specialists, LLC (WCS) and Orano CIS, LLC, a subsidiary of Orano USA. The CISF will be built adjacent to the WCS low-level radioactive waste (LLW) disposal site in Andrews County, Texas. The name of the facility is the WCS CISF and the licensee and operator of the facility will be ISP.
