SSE Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP) announced August 2 that it has signed a contract with Ukrainian company PJSC Ukrenergomontazh (UBM) for work regarding early dismantling of the Shelter Object that was constructed over the destroyed reactor of Unit 4 in the weeks after the accident in 1986. The Shelter Object, also referred to as the sarcophagus, still contains the molten reactor core and highly radioactive material. The New Safe Confinement (NSC) building was constructed over the shelter facility since the stability of the Shelter Object was a major risk factor at the site. A project to stabilize the most vulnerable structures was completed in 2008. Experts determined at that time, however, that the maximum end-of-service-life deadline of the stabilized structures was specified as late 2023.
