South Korea is poised to launch its first satellite equipped with synthetic aperture radar coupled to a follow-on launch in mid-2012 to expand its space-based Earth observations capability. Funded by the education and science ministry, Kompsat 3 will have an optical resolution greater than 1 metre and like its predecessors it is designed by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute and built by Korea Aerospace Industries.
