Wildfires Choke Russian Cities

Though Russia's wildfires appeared to be abating, fires in two regions continued to produce heavy smoke on Aug. 15. The image at right, taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on NASA's Terra satellite, shows fires outside of the city of Nizhny Novgorod, east of Moscow. Dense white smoke rises from two large fires (oudined in red) and arcs north over the city. Several other fires bum in the forest east of the largest fires. Fires in the region earlier enveloped Moscow in choking smoke, completely obscuring the city from view.
