NASA Giving QuickScat Spares New Mission on Space Station

NASA is spending $18.5 million to transform mothballed spare parts from a retired wind-measurement satellite into a new hosted observatory that will be launched to the international space station (ISS) in 2014, an agency official said. The instrument, called ISS-Rapid-Scat, will be delivered to the space station aboard a Space Exploration Technologies Corp. Dragon capsule during one of the company's NASA-funded commercial cargo runs to the orbital outpost.
