The U.S. launch industry is pushing Congress to renew a long-standing law that limits their liability in the event of a launch accident. That law expires at the end of this year. Without government indemnification of commercial launches, U.S. launch operators would have to buy more insurance than they already do. Currently, the U.S. government requires commercial launch operators to purchase insurance to cover the first $500 million in any third-party claims that may result from a launch mishap. In the event of a truly catastrophic mishap, the government would be responsible for paying any third-party damage claims up to $1.5 billion.
