NPOESS Segment Goes Operational With Weather Data

Raytheon Co. captured data from an experimental U.S. De-partment of Defense weather satellite using part of the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) network, the company announced July 7. Raytheon downloaded data from the Coriolis satellite using the command, control and communications segment of NPOESS, making it one of the first NPOESS segments to reach operational status, Raytheon said. The network incorporates fiber optic links that connect antennas at Svalbard arid Tromso in Norway, to the continental United States. The network sent the data to the Coriolis Data Distribution site in Suitland, Md. The Coriolis satellite measures ocean surface winds and solar activity.
