Space Systems/Loral To Leave Bankruptcy On Its Own

Loral's satellite manufacturing unit will emerge from bankruptcy before its parent company to send a signal to its government and commercial customers that it is a healthy competitor on solid financial footing, Patrick De-Witt, president of the satellite maker, said April 29. That message is particularly aimed at the U.S. Navy, which will decide within a month between two teams competing to build the Mobile User Objective System (MUOS), the Pentagon's next-generation satellite system for mobile users. The MUOS satellites and ground systems are expected to cost more than $6 billion.
