Sen. Brownback Seeks Commission To Weigh Shuttering NASA Facilities

The chairman of the U.S. Senate panel that oversees NASA said he intends to push for legislation this year that would set the stage for realigning or closing some of the space agency's 10 field centers. Sen. Sam Brownback (R Kan.), chairman of the Senate Commerce science, technology and space subcommittee, said he wants to establish an independent commission for NASA similar to the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) commissions the Pentagon pe-riodically turns to for military base closure recommendations. Brown-back said he would attempt to include language to create a similar commission for NASA in the NASA authorization act he and other lawmakers want to see Congress pess this year.
