NASA Prepares To Award Lightning Sensor Contract

NASA is expected to award a contract as soon as Dec. 14 for a lightning-detection instrument to be hosted aboard an upcoming series of geostationary-orbiting weather satellites, the first of which is expected to launch no earlier than 2014. Lockheed Martin Advanced Technologies and Ball Aerospace and Technologies are vying for the Geostationary Lightning Mapper contract.
