Mobile Satellite Rivals Pursue Dual-mode Chipsets

Start-up mobile satellite services provider TerreStar Corp. has joined rivals SkyTerra and ICO Global in striking an agreement with Qualcomm Inc. to develop dual-mode satellite-cellular chipsets, Reston, Va.-based TerreStar announced Dec. 11. The three satellite companies hope that by combining their efforts with Qualcomm, they can assure prospective customers of a sufficiently large market for satellite-terrestrial devices. SkyTerra, formerly named Mobile Satellite Ventures, is building an L-band mobile satellite system and signed an accord with Qualcomm and S-band provider ICO Global Communications in September. TerreStar also uses S-band.
