Eutelsat of Paris and ViaSat Corp. of Carlsbad, Calif., team up to introduce large Ka-band consumer broadband projects in Europe and the United States. Eutelsat orders the Ka-Sat all-Ka-band satellite from Astrium Satellites, and ViaSat orders ViaSat-1 from Space Systems/Loral. Both satellites will use ViaSat-built ground communications gear. NASA's Messenger satellite, launched in August 2004, flies within 200 kilometers of Mercury in the first of three planned flybys expected before the probe settles into a final Mercury orbit in 2011.
