Satellites and the technology embedded within them provide important capabilities to their owners. The ad-vantages gained through space-based intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance can mean the difference between mission failure and success. But as with any advantageous technology, satellites are threatened by adversaries -and the threat is not just that a satellite will be rendered useless after it has reached orbit. The threat to a satellite begins much earlier in its lifecycle, and therefore, efforts to protect it must begin long before it becomes operational.
