摘要

The high and irreversible rate of urbanization in regions marked with high earthquake hazard levels necessitates a broader perspective for the assessment of urban earthquake risk and associated loss. In this assessment, the professional is faced with a variety of scientific and practical problems associated with the identification of primary and sequential earthquake hazards and of a variety of physical elements at risk. Significant efforts have been dedicated to various aspects of these problems in the last 20 years. Key areas addressed as part of these efforts include: (1) Development of advanced hazard models incorporating tectonic, seismological, geological and historical information for a rational assessment of input ground motion at different locations.
