Assurance of Data Security and Privacy in the Cloud: A Three-Dimensional Perspective

The world is witnessing exponential growth in cloud-based service delivery, which is forecast to grow even more. This suggests a positive tendency in the attitude and mood of the typical business user with respect to the adoption of cloud services. Industry reports attribute this evolutionary change to rising confidence in security and privacy solutions for the cloud computing environment. Based on an extensive literature review, this article presents a three-dimensional conceptual model that describes the relationships between factors that are contributing to this increasing confidence in the cloud. The dimensions are: security solutions, security operations, and security compliance, which are all elements of security assurance. This can help practitioners plan and design quality systems for security in the cloud that build trust in cloud services and promote the continued adoption of this technology for mission-critical business.
