Introduction to 81:4

Sociological Inquiry 81:4 opens with "The Standpoint of Art/Criticism: Cindy Sherman as Feminist Artist?" by Jessica Sprague-Jones and Joey Spra-gue. In this paper, the authors examine the possibility that the construction of knowledge in and about art is done in a manner that benefits those in prime positions of existing hierarchical arrangements. This use of standpoint theory is tested with an analysis of works by Cindy Sherman, a highly successful feminist artist. Through the examination outlined in their paper, Sprague-Jones and Sprague find that Sherman's work conforms to the privileged male standpoint they find pervasive in other well-regarded works of art.
