Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Mania: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

The limitations of pharmacotherapy and the acceptance of the stress-vulnerability model have contributed to an increase in adjunctive psychosocial therapies for bipolar disorder. While considerable attention has been given to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for bipolar disorder, the practical significance of CBT in reducing manic symptoms remains unexplored. The purpose of the present meta-analytic study is to determine the overall effect of CBT in reducing manic symptoms of adults diagnosed with a bipolar disorder. The results of the meta-analysis showed CBT had a small effect; weighted mean d of a??0.26 (CI: a??0.54 to 0.02, p > .05).
