Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is characterized by an intense preoccupation with a slight or imagined defect in physical appearance. Its onset, frequently in adolescence, involves an anxiety that curtails social involvement, derails a developing positive sense of self, and often predisposes those afflicted to chronic mental-health problems. Convinced their condition is genuinely physical, BDD patients seek help from internists, dermatologists, and even plastic surgeons rather than mental-health practitioners. Treatment of any kind has limited success with BDD; the disorder tends to be long term and debilitating.
