Parents commonly migrate in order to improve their families' living standards through economically supporting dependants they leave behind, who comprise mainly children. For these children, such experiences may adversely affect them, especially if they are left in vulnerable situations, as not all are fortunate to attain effective substitute parental care. This paper seeks to further understand the nature of this phenomenon through exploring related literature. It attempts to trace the origins, as well as examine factors that can explain the persistence of Caribbean parental migration in such a manner that the analysis has relevance within the context of Trinidad.
