Critically Evaluating the Interrelationship between Population Migration and Housing Markets in the UK: A Critical Literature Review

Whilst population migration and housing markets have often been the subject of academic research, there is a surprising lack of significant work on the linkage between these two. This paper sets out to examine the interrelationship between population migration and housing markets in the UK through a comprehensive literature review. It seems that while certain explanatory factors in the housing markets such as house prices and housing supply influence migration decisions, migration in turn influence these factors. Particularly when the period of time is lengthy, sustained net inward migration is likely eventually to lead to housing congestion, higher prices and new housing development.
