The Chelsea Chronicle, 1905 to 1913

This article draws on collections from the Chelsea F.C. Chronicle, from 1905 to 1913, to highlight the importance of club match programmes and their potential use as a rich source of information for the football historian. It also intends to make a contribution to our understanding of Edwardian and southern professional football. A thematic analysis of the contents of the Chronicle shows how it contributed to the invented tradition of professional football in the cluba??s formative years. Exploring the programmea??s views on money, the issue of fair play by spectators and players, and its relation to the Stamford Bridge crowd, the article also addresses the programmea??s attitude to other London teams and those from the north of England.
