Cumberland Soaring Group - Fifty Years Young!

The Cumberland Soaring Group, Cumberland, Maryland recently had a celebration marking its fiftieth anniversary. It was one of those events that, when over, everyone said, "why don't we do this more often." Rightly so, as much fun was had by all. I came to the CSG with my father as a five-year-old in love with airplanes. That was 1960. The club was in full bloom by then, having been originated by Dr. Robert K. Poling and the great Bill Holbrook in the summer of 1959. These two friends had discovered that the ridge to the west of the Cumberland airport would allow a PiperJ-3 to maintain altitude with both of them aboard and the throttle at idle on certain days.
