Peabody Energy reports smoke in update on Australian mine evacuation

Peabody Energy Corp. has restricted access to its North Goonyella mine in Queensland, Australia due to elevated gas levels discovered in early September and a possible fire inside the mine. Peabody implemented an exclusion zone at the metallurgical mine about 100 miles west of Mackay, Queensland, according to a Sept. 27 news release. Mine personnel also saw smoke coming from the mine, signaling a fire in a portion of the mine, the company said. Peabody is cooperating with the Queensland Mines Inspectorate and other third-party personnel in handling the situation and evaluating the next steps.
