Coal sector-led council finalizing recommendations for DOE to boost coal exports

A slate of potential policy changes that would advance U.S. coal exportsrnis being completed for U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry by a council primarilyrnconsisting of representatives of the coal industry.rnThe report, currently in draft form, suggests policies to help deployrnadvanced coal mining and processing technologies, streamline funding forrnthe nation’s inland waterway systems, enhance port and terminal capacity,rneliminate policy and technology barriers to deploying coal plants to otherrncountries, and support efforts to advance coal as a means of “economicrndevelopment in international markets.” Perry directed the National CoalrnCouncil, a body that has advised the U.S. Energy Department since 1984, tornprepare the report in January and to propose what could be done to increasernexport opportunities for U.S. coal.
