Canadian government to impose carbon tax on hold-out provinces

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau unveiled his government’s plan totax emissions in provinces that refuse to impose their own levies.The government will impose a tax of C$20 per metric ton on large emittersand fuels effective April 1, 2019, and increase it annually by C$10/tonne untilit reaches C$50/tonne in 2022. The levy will be imposed in the provinces ofManitoba, New Brunswick, Ontario and Saskatchewan. Yukon and Nunavutterritories, which will initially be excluded from the so-called carbon tax, willsee the tax added in July 2019. Consumers will pay the tax through hikes atthe gas pump and on home-heating bills, while industrial emitters will pay itdirectly.
