Murray Energy-controlled mines produce nearly 18 million tons of coal in Q3

Murray Energy Corp. produced about 17.6 million tons of coal in the third quarter from its portfolio of mines in the Northern Appalachia, Illinois and Uinta basins, a 6.9% increase compared to the same period a year ago. Production for the first three quarters of the year declined slightly, from 53.7 million tons to about 52.6 million tons, according to an S&P Global Market Intelligence analysis. Murray Energy is the largest privately held coal company in the U.S. and focuses on underground coal mining. Spokesman Cody Nett said that while a roof fall caused an unexpected outage at the company’s Marshall County mine in West Virginia, the primary difference between the levels of output in the most recent and year-ago periods was the number of longwall mining equipment moves. He said changes in demand have not had a major influence on production levels this year, and the year-to-date decline would likely be largely offset through increases in production in the fourth quarter.
