In an analog world, there is no such thing as perfect reception. Even the best analog transmission system degrades the signal to some extent and even the best recordings suffer generational losses. In the digital world, television signals are perfect, you either have the signal or you don't and built-in error correction takes care of the rest. The first copy and the tenth copy look exactly like the original. This dramatically changes the importance of copy protection. Although thieves will always find a way, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (1998) gives content providers the legal tools to try to circumvent unauthorized copying. Even if the digital technology is easily hacked, the law still makes it illegal.
