Mercenaries and their activities have a certain cachet and entertain a wide fascination with the general public. They are often associated with sinister motives and even more sinister deeds. As Sir James Manson notes in Frederick Forsyth's The Dogs of War, 'Knocking off a bank or an armored truck is merely crude. Knocking off an entire republic has, I feel, a certain style'. Al Venter remains fascinated by the genre and Mercenaries is this latest work in a series that includes War Dog, Gunship Ace, Barrel of a Gun, and The Chopper Boys.
