Auto-Ordnance and Colt's Patent Firearms entered a contract to build 15,000 "Thompson Submachine Guns", on August 18, 1920. These arms were all to be built in the Model of 1921A configuration. Originally, this design did not have a buttstock, front or rear sights included. True to their word, Colt's had all of the necessary tooling installed and started delivering guns on March 30, 1921. A total of 40 Model 1919 Thomp- sons had previously been manufactured by Auto-Ordnance, Colt's production run began at serial no. 41.
