In 1920, as soon as the package of drawings and specifications was complete, General Thompson approached two firms: the Colt's Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut, with whom he had a long-standing relationship as an Ordnance officer since before the turn of the century, and the Savage Arms Corporation of Utica, New York, which had extensive experience manufacturing rifles and Lewis automatic machine guns during World War I, with a request for quotes to manufacture an astounding 15,000 examples of the nearly-perfected Thompson submachine gun.
