The Smith & Wesson Victory Model

The U.S. Smith and Wesson® (S&W) Company has long been recognized for producing fine, world-class revolvers. During their first four decades in business, S&W only manufactured top-break and tip-up style revolvers, a design not well suited for more powerful cartridges, like the .38 Special introduced in 1898 by Smith & Wesson. Inl899 S&W introduced a solid frame revolver for their new .38 Special round; the new revolver was named the M&P the letters representing "Military and Police". The U.S. Army was not particularly interested in procuring revolvers, preferring semiautomatic pistols; however, during 1900, the U.S. Navy was the first to purchase a substantial number of M&P revolvers.
