I first came across the ex-GW rail link from Ruabon to Dolgellau and onwards to Morfa Mawddach over Cambrian metals in 1962, as a result of a family holiday to Barmouth-I'm afraid to say by car. Over the next few years we made numerous visits to the Cambrian Coast, although from 1965 onwards this picturesque line had closed. It was shortly after the village of Llanuwchllyn, situated at the western end of Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid) that the road and railway came in close proximity to each other, a situation which persisted until Dolgellau, where road and rail parted to run on opposite sides of the Mawddach Estuary down to the coast.
