摘要

This article examines Godfried Donkor's installation 'Financial Times', exhibited within the Hackney Museum's display commemorating 'Abolition 07'. By contrasting familiar abolitionist icons with representations of enslaved black women and men, political leaders, mythic figures and heroic freedom-fighters, Donkor's collaged images operate in slippery relation to the museum's exhibition. His experimental montage comes to life on sheets of the Financial Times newspaper interspersed with excerpts from African American 'Dream Books'. Donkor's experimental layering of visual and textual fragments testifies to the need for a 'repeated engagement' as the only way to get to grips with his 'conflicting aesthetics'.
