In recent years, great attention has been paid to the investigation on the value of phyto-plankton as food for larvae of commercial fish, prawn and shellfish in China. During the period of 1987~1989, the author conducted studies on food value of some marine microalgae for larvae of Penaeus orientalis. In those experiments, it was shown that during Zoea and Mysis phases of P. orientalis, the best growth and development of the larvae came from feeding on Skeletonema costatum, and secondly on the other species of diatom such as Chaetoceros muelleri and Phaeodactylum tricornutum. Those green algae and blue green algae including Dunaliella salina and Spirulina platensis, were poor feed for the larvae. In this paper, data on the total protein and amino acid composition of eight species of marine algae which consist of three species of diatom, four species of green algae and one blue green alga are presented, and the possible links between certain components in these algae and food value of the algae feed for larvae of P. orientalis are investigated.
