Three "fathers of the deep learning revolution" will share the $1 million A.M. Turing prize for "conceptual and engineering breakthroughs that have made deep neural networks a critical component of computing". Yoshua Bengio, Geoffrey Hinton and Yann LeCun have been recognised by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) for their work, done independently and together, to develop techniques including backpropagation algorithms, Boltzmann machines, generative adversarial networks, and convolutional neural networks - ideas that have led to advances in areas such as image and speech recognition, and natural language processing.
