A report from the Syrian Center for Policy Research (SCPR) claims that 470 000 Syrians have lost their lives, with a further 1.88 million wounded, since armed conflict began in March 2011. The SCPR researchers estimate that due to deaths, migration, asylum and other factors, Syria's population fell from 21.8 million in 2010 to 20.2 million as of the end of 2015. Life expectancy at birth has also fallen, from 70.5 years to 55.4 years, over the same period. Although the SCPR's death toll figure has been widely cited since it was published in February, the report itself gives little explanation for how the estimate was arrived at. It is almost double that quoted in a report from a United Nations Security Council meeting dated August 2015 (bit.ly/1Xckql1) which references "over 250 000" dead.
