For centuries, the oceans have served as the highways for exploration, military operations and international commerce. Since its founding, the U.S. Navy's mission has been to keep the sea lanes open and safe in times of war and peace. But the Navy faces new threats beyond those presented by the ongoing war on terrorism. Emerging technologies offer aggressors new means to wreak havoc on international shipping and coalition forces. Several Web sites highlight the Navy's efforts to meet these changing threats.
