In the wake of the continuing crisis following the March earthquake and tsunami in Japan, a network of U.S. scientists using powerful supercomputers is banding together to provide both short- and long-term assistance to colleagues and officials in the stricken Asian nation. Supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the TeraGrid is a network of 11 high-performance super-computing locations across the United States that collectively boasts 2.5 petaflops of computing power and more than 50 petabytes of online and archival digital storage. Researchers have access to more than 150 discipline-related databases, making the TeraGrid one of the largest distributed resources for open scientific research worldwide.
