What is the best way to learn? Clearly that is an open-ended question, but many would answer: by doing. When it comes to teaching students how to apply science and technology in practical ways, an effective learn-by-doing methodology is a competition aligned with science and technology. For example, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) historically used competitions such as its Grand Challenge as ways to accelerate progress, particularly in critical science and technology domains and applications.
