The USS Chafee (DDG-90) has become the first ship in the U.S. Navy to be completely refitted with 600 new light emitting diode (LED) lights. The new lamps are expected to save money on energy compared to the incandescent and fluorescent lights and fixtures they replaced. The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, part of the Pacific Fleet based at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, will save more than $50,000 per year on energy costs with the new bulbs. The new • fixtures also have a minimum 50,000-hour lifespan, compared with 1,000 hours for incandescent bulbs and 7,500 hours for fluorescents. In the next few months, the Chafee's sister ship, the USS Preble (DDG-88), also is slated to receive the same LED upgrades along with new LEDs for its twofoot-long T12 fluorescent fixtures, the most common lighting on this class of vessel. The Chafee also will be swapping out .its Tl2s. Officials estimate total energy savings of up to $100,000 annually per ship when both types of LED refits are implemented.
