DARPA Taps Commercial Apps

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) wants assistance from the smartphone app development community to revolutionize sensor systems using mobile technology. DARPA's Adaptable Sensor System (ADAPT) program actively is seeking commercial app developers to address specific sensor challenges, such as collecting, organizing, storing and sharing video information. Smartphone technology provides the opportunity to change the way sensor systems are developed and used, says Mark Rich, DARPA program manager. The agency hopes commercial developers offer innovative approaches featuring low-cost intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) sensor applications. According to Rich, one potential scenario for an ADAPT network could include sensors onboard small unmanned aerial vehicles flying in a swarm networked together. These networks of sensors would share data and provide user interface in various ways, such as via video to a tablet device.
