AFCEA was saddened to learn of the death this year of Col. Ellis R. "Bing" Ates, USA (Ret.), one of the associations most stalwart members. Col. Ates is legendary among longtime AFCEANs as a recruiter without peer. Over the course of his 47-year membership, he recruited an estimated 3,000 individual members for the association. In 2006, AFCEA named its highest recruiting and retention award after him. After more than two decades in the Army, Col. Ates retired from active duty in 1963 and began a career in what then was the Defense Communications Agency-now the Defense Information Systems Agency. He joined AFCEA in 1966, and eight years later AFCEA's then-president Vice Adm. Jon L. Boyes, USN (Ret.), asked him to help stimulate growth in the association.
