The chapters February luncheon featured Capt. Gary Mayes, USN, commanding officer of Naval Base Coronado, as its keynote speaker. Capt. Mayes is a distinguished career naval aviator who cites his involvement with humanitarian relief during the Hurricane Katrina disaster as his most significant career accomplishment. As commanding officer of Naval Base Coronado and its anchor base installation, Naval Air Station, North Island, the captain is focused on energy conservation, broadening public outreach and improving the lifestyle for sailors and their families. Capt. Mayes described his focus as "fleet, fighter, family," citing the many opportunities for sailors to enrich themselves during their stay at the base. He also talked about the naval installations under his command that provide the Navy with a wealth of training capabilities, such as the Navy's only live firetraining range on San Clemente Island. Capt. Mayes feels that Naval Base Coronado and its installations will continue to make the growing changes necessary to support the fleet during this time of budgetary uncertainty.
