Fighters Go to the Videotape

A versa module European-based hardware and software system will support the development of the Eurofighter Typhoon by capturing, recording and displaying—in real time—video signals received from the aircraft during its test flights. The equipment is designed to capture the multiplexed video stream, received via a microwave link from the Eurofighter, then time-stamp each frame. The demultiplexed images are then processed for display on a standard workstation. This will allow ground staff to analyze different aspects of the aircraft's sortie as it progresses. The technology, developed by Primagraphics Limited, Litlington, England, features a video processing system that delays the video sequences up to 5 seconds to enable them to be synchronized with data relayed from other onboard systems. Operators also can record specific maneuvers using a 200-second store capability so that they can replay video sequences to verify that the Eurofighter's avionics systems are operating correctly.
